Elba and the island hopping road trip dream

by Sara Norris

A Tuscany trip highlight for me was a day trip to Elba. I have been to both Corsica and Sardinia couple of years ago but this was the first time on Elba. Not the last time though – I want to do this island hopping road trip tour. Before I just planned I would do Corsica-Sardinia-Sicily but now Elba has to be included on the list. The scenery was magical and the roads for doing photos and videos… Wow.

The island hopping road trip is a dream I already wrote previously, but because I moved to Zürich earlier this year some things had to be postponed. Now earliest time I would have time to go would be October or November. In the US road trip I want to include Pikes Peak so I have to choose the months wisely (although November should be OK for driving Pikes Peak). The island hopping trip could also be doable in November (because I do not require perfect beach weather on my road trips, I am there to drive). But not sure which one I will end up doing first – both has to be done! One this year and the other next year?

All of these islands have a rally history. When you are there, you understand why. The roads go up and down and you do not count the corners because they go on and on forever. When I was driving in Sardinia in late October 2012 I was completely alone on many of the roads, it was amazing. La Maddalena was almost empty from tourists but still I got a few days on the beach (but I am from Finland of course, 18-20 degrees and I consider it bikini weather). Autumn is actually a great time to go if you are in the hunt for driving pleasure. Less tourists, less traffic, but still the same amazing scenery. A little less sunshine hours and less hours spent getting bored on the beach or by the pool because of the weather, but that just means more hours behind the wheel of a nice car.

Not convinced yet? Just watch the videos below and you want to go too…
