Restaurant Day. The idea is that anyone can open their own restaurant for one day, anywhere they want to (home, office, street corner, park, beach, your car…).  Restaurant Day originated in Helsinki, Finland, and it happens four times a year, about every three months. The first Restaurant Day was in May 2011 and it is now a popular happening in Finland, but it’s also spreading internationally (on 19.5. there will be restaurants in 16 different countries!).
 
Next restaurant day is on Saturday 19th (in 2 days) and although the majority of the restaurants are in Helsinki or other locations in Finland, you can find some in Germany, Austria, Sweden… hopefully in future there will be more international locations available. But if you’re in Helsinki this Saturday, then it’s going to be a tough choice to pick the right place. I’ve been sitting here for a while now reading and I still can’t make up my mind about where to go, I just know I’m getting really hungry right now and there are too many hours left before it starts. The first restaurant actually opens the night between Friday and Saturday, 00:00, so you can start then and go restaurant hopping all day if you want to.
