Because I’m on my way to the Nokia World evening event /party in 20 minutes, I have to keep this short and simple and let the photos do the talking. I have the Nokia Lumia 800 in my hands now for a couple of days, so will do some testing. Based on what I’ve seen so far, it’s a pleasure to use. The tiles are elegant, they are different and you easily find everything you want. Social media access has been made easy, now you just share your images on Facebook or Twitter with a few taps. That was one problem I had with the N8 when I trialed it, because I want to very easily be able to tweet photos. Gravity was the only application that satisfied my taste, but 10€ for an application is of course ridiculous when you know it shouldn’t be that difficult to have it inbuilt in the phone. Now we get it! Nokia Maps is amazing, it will provide you with information about public transportation in several big cities around the world so you know what bus to take, when and from which stop. Also you can search for places nearby your current location – bar, shops, museums… whatever you want. Traveling made easy.
Nokia navigation system “Nokia Drive” is brilliant – I honestly don’t see a very bright future for individual navigation devices anymore. If you can get it in your phone and it’s working like a dream, then what more could you ask for? Nokia Pulse is another cool new feature. Main idea is that you can create groups and communicate with them more easily – share information, share photos, share locations etc. Haven’t tested this one yet, but looked interesting.
The Windows phone is in many ways a dream come true if I think about what I am looking for: it has the design, it has the social media connections integrated very nicely, I can easily access my emails… BUT. I haven’t tried the camera too much yet, need to try as much as possible the next few days. I’m afraid it’s nowhere near the quality an N8 can deliver, so I’m honestly not sure what I want anymore. Do I want amazing images and videos, or do I want a phone that has everything else I want but not the perfect camera? Why can’t I get both in one? Can you do a new Windows phone with the N8 camera for me?!

What about the N9, how do you like it’s social integration?… (It wouldn’t help much though, since the N8 camera still beats it.)
I haven’t used the N9 myself, just seen it in a friends hand. So I don’t know about the social integration there, and I’m not that interested in the N9 either, because it doesn’t have a better camera than the N8, and it’s on Meego… so for me it’s pretty much between the N8 and Windows phone.
The N8 camera quality is so superb, that I’m not sure if the Lumia 800 is even close. When I asked all people told me that it’s like the N9 camera, perhaps in terms of color even slightly better. The N9 camera seems to be quite OK if you look at online pics, so perhaps I will go for the Lumia 800 after all, because the design is SO nice!
And Lumia had a very good social integration – browser worked good, tweeting and Facebooking was very easy (Gravity absolutely not needed anymore), you can connect your phone to LinkedIn, Gmail etc… Lumia does not have NFC though, that’s a big minus, because Nokia are launching more and more NFC products so for me it would be quite crucial that their new “flagship device” would support NFC.
N9 is quite “unnecessary” after this launch if I have to be honest, it doesn’t seem to offer anything unique. If I want a good camera, I’ll most likely buy the N8 until Nokia will launch a Lumia with N8 quality optics. If I want a nice design and a great platform that will be supported also in future with apps etc, I go for the Lumia 800.
But then again some might like the Meego design more, I personally loved the Windows look. I just really wished it had the NFC and N8 camera
And yes of course, N9 is the one to go for if you want NFC… but still, what a disappointment that the 800 didn’t have it. I sort of expected it HAS TO be in it, what’s the point in launching a device that is only half-finished.
