Nokia Lumia 800: it’s incomplete

I didn’t want to publish this post before the podcast I listened to in London was available online, and it now is. The thing is that when you’re at Nokia World, you get overwhelmed by the atmosphere there. You focus on the positive things and later when everything has calmed down, you have time to reflect less good things as well. On Thursday we were given the opportunity to listen and/or participate in a 361 degrees podcast. Nokia was obviously the main discussion subject there, but the thing I liked here was that it gave a different perspective to the whole thing, as it wasn’t all about praises and positive things. Listen to the podcast – interesting discussions, part two will have some good comments in it as well (online next week, bookmark the site!).

The Lumia 800 is a great product, there’s no doubt about that. I personally love the Windows platform and I like the clean design and the sharpness of it, it’s not all about round icons anymore, the tiles look so much better. The social media integration is great (Twitter, Facebook etc built in the phone = no need for separate applications anymore) – now I can’t comment the N9 as someone asked in my previous post, because I haven’t used it – but this is so much better than the N8 that I did try.

But it’s incomplete. It’s like a prototype they just had to put on display there although it was not finished, because otherwise this years Nokia World would only have been about the Asha phones, and that’s not good enough from a company like Nokia. Could Nokia have done better this time? YES.

Nokia World 2011

It doesn’t have NFC. This is my main issue with it, because Nokia is SO proud of their NFC and they are launching all these NFC products – many of them very cool – but then their new flagship model doesn’t support NFC? Why? You would think that when a company invent something that cool, they would hold on to it tightly, and in such case it’s in my opinion not acceptable to launch a device this good, and with this much potential, without the NFC. They should have pushed harder; they should have decided that they have to get NFC to it in time.

Now if I want NFC the only device I would buy is the N9 (I’ve tried the Nokia 701 and although it’s a good phone, it’s not the same thing). But I don’t want to buy the N9: if I want a good operating system, I choose Lumia 800. If I want a good camera, I choose the N8.

They launched two Windows phones, but not one with a N8 quality camera. This is something I really, really, really want to have in a future Lumia phone. People say that the design suffers if they put the N8 optics to it and it won’t be as thin anymore: I do not care. I just want the PERFECT phone that can deliver all the best things Nokia has to offer (so basically social media integration, NFC, N8 camera and Windows operating system – I could actually take the dual sim as well, I like the idea of having work number and personal number separated but within the same phone).

These are the two issues I have with the Lumia 800. It might not sound like a lot, but it feels like a lot to be honest. Two crucial things I hoped they would have included in this new device, but they didn’t. How long do I have to wait for the one I want? I know they WILL launch a device that has everything I want in future – no doubt about that, I’m just tired of waiting!

Does someone feel the Lumia 800 has everything you need?

Nokia 800 doesn’t have nfc, mass storage mode, usb on the go, tethering support(use phone as modem to use phone’s internet on pc,turn phone’s internet into wifi hotspot)and zero customization!
Even my 4 year old backup phone nokia n81 has usb mass storage so that I can use my phone as pen drive to get data from other person’s pc
so if suppose I want to copy data from some one’s pc to nokia 800 then I will have to install Zune software on that pc which SUCKS!

That was feedback I hadn’t even heard of before! Good to know though. My issue with the 800 is probably that I know they could do so much better in many ways, that’s why I feel it’s “incomplete” (imperfect)… they already have the tools for a damn good smartphone as they have done the N8, the N9 etc.

Now someone said to me on Twitter that the 800 is NOT a flagship device, however when you read about it online many call it the new flagship device… but perhaps they have something even better in store for us, to be launched soon? Hopefully!
